What to know before you walk into a tattoo studio

By Xelo · April 2019

Getting tattooed is a big decision. A little preparation goes a long way — here’s what to keep in mind before you walk into any tattoo studio.

  1. Research the studio and the artist. Read reviews, ask friends who have tattoos, and choose a reputable studio with a clean, sterile environment and a skilled professional.
  2. Bring reference material. Pictures or drawings you love help the artist understand your vision — they’re inspiration, not a template.
  3. Communicate your vision and concerns. Be clear about what you want, and mention allergies or sensitivities upfront.
  4. Follow your artist’s instructions. You may be asked to avoid certain medications or activities beforehand. It matters for the result.
  5. Wear comfortable clothing. Loose clothes give easy access to the area and won’t rub against it afterwards.
  6. Eat a proper meal. A full stomach keeps your energy up. Skip alcohol — it thins the blood and causes excess bleeding.
  7. Stay hydrated. Drink plenty of water before and after your session; hydrated skin takes ink and heals better.
  8. Bring a friend. Especially for your first tattoo, some company helps you stay calm.
  9. Ask questions. About the process, the design, aftercare — a good artist is happy to explain.
  10. Don’t rush it. Take your time, think it through, and only go ahead when you’re completely sure.
