Your appointment is coming up, but you’re still on antibiotics — or you took the last pill two days ago? You can get tattooed, but here’s why it’s not the best idea.
What antibiotics do
Antibiotics are prescription medications that treat bacterial infections, for example of the airways or bladder. They stop bacteria from multiplying or kill them directly. It’s important never to stop a course early, or the infection can return.
Risks and side effects
Common antibiotics such as amoxicillin and cefuroxime list skin hypersensitivity among their side effects — itching, rashes or hives. You also become more susceptible to other bacteria and fungi. Even without skin reactions, the overall risk of infection is higher, which isn’t an ideal starting point for a fresh tattoo.
Effects on healing
A new tattoo is always a wound. Antibiotics don’t just fight unwanted bacteria; they also affect your skin’s natural microbiome, which can influence wound healing and the skin barrier.
